2017 Jaguar XF Review

Keith Buglewicz

By Keith Buglewicz

Updated November 25, 2019

Pros

If you’re seeking a midsize-luxury performance sedan that shuns the overpopulated masses of BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz cars seemingly everywhere you look, the 2017 Jaguar XF is it. Outstanding driving dynamics coupled with traditional British styling form a one-two punch that’s hard to beat.

Cons

If you’re seeking the most trouble-free ownership experience over the duration of your loan, Jaguar’s reputation, although vastly improved, still can’t hold a candle to the products of Lexus, Infiniti or Acura. The XF’s somewhat subdued interior design may also be a deal breaker.

What's New?

The big news for the 2017 Jaguar XF is the addition of a new 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine. With 180 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque, this peppy little powerplant promises fuel economy in the 40-plus-mpg range.

Jaguar’s XF performance sedan for 2017 offers luxury buyers a unique way to stand out in a crowded parking lot full of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi cars. With dramatic styling that is both elegant and aggressive, the 2017 XF is a real looker, displaying traditional Jaguar design elements that won’t have it mistaken for any other brand. And while the XF’s cockpit isn’t as lavish as in an Audi A6 or a Cadillac CTS, its simple styling and quality materials create an environment that is both soothing and easy to operate. A choice of two supercharged V6s and a new 4-cylinder turbodiesel are backed by an 8-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel drive (AWD), helping the 2017 Jaguar XF remain relevant in a very competitive segment.

2017 Jaguar XF Pricing

2017 Jaguar XF pricing starts at $14,166 for the XF XF 20d Sedan 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $49,995 when new. The range-topping 2017 XF XF S Sedan 4D starts at $22,246 today, originally priced from $67,195.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2017 Jaguar XF models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the Jaguar XF

We can attest that any number of premium sedans are enjoyable to drive, but only a handful have us thinking about the driving experience long after we’ve put the car to bed. The 2017 Jaguar XF is one of those cars. With its 380-horsepower supercharged V6 purring under the hood, the XF sports sedan blasts down the road, its precision steering fearing no turn, its nimble suspension adapting to whatever road conditions await. The 8-speed transmission reacts quickly to inputs from the steering-wheel-mounted paddles, although it’s equally adept when left on its own. The XF’s user-selectable driving modes allow the driver to choose among Normal, Eco, Dynamic and Winter. While the operating interface felt somewhat clumsy, the system definitely delivers on its promise. The Dynamic mode ups the XF’s performance capabilities via a stiffer suspension setting, but also brings rather jarring shifts some editors found to be a bit too abrupt.

Interior Comfort

The 2017 Jaguar XF luxury sedan’s interior isn’t fancy or flashy. Instead, it trades chrome highlights and out-there design for a simple, straightforward interface that’s tasteful and elegant. The big InControl Touch Pro system takes center stage, offering most functions through its touch-screen interface. That could be a problem, but the big screen and easy-to-see icons make using it simple. The heated and cooled seats are comfortable when cruising, and plenty supportive for those times when you just have to blast through that onramp. The rear seats are also decent, and the around-town quiet is pure luxury sedan.

Exterior Styling

Jaguar’s 2017 XF sedan isn’t a radical styling departure from the original, and we’re okay with that. The latest XF maintains the same basic profile, with the long hood and short trunk emphasizing the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. The grille is properly upright for better aerodynamics and to better tie it in with the Jaguar XE and revised XJ sedans. The LED accents on the headlights look modern and just right, and vents in the front bumper route air over the front wheels, reducing drag and helping fuel economy.

Favorite Features

INCONTROL TOUCH PRO
Where once Jaguar was at the back of the line with its audio and infotainment equipment, the new InControl Touch Pro moves them to the head of the class. A customizable interface can be operated via gesture controls, and there is even an app to control vehicle functions.

JAGUAR ELITECARE
To bolster a commitment to improving quality, the 2017 Jaguar XF comes with a best-in-class warranty providing bumper-to-bumper coverage for five years or 60,000 miles. The warranty also covers scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance and includes a 5-year/unlimited miles warranty on the InControl Remote and Protect system.

Standard Features

Jaguar’s 2017 XF comes as nicely equipped as you’d expect of a high-end luxury sedan. There’s dual-zone climate control, cruise control, power windows and all that kind of stuff, sure. There’s also an 8-inch version of the InControl touch-screen interface, start/stop technology, rear parking camera, and a 380-watt 12-speaker Meridian sound system. Other standard features include Jaguar Drive Control with its selectable modes, 3-position memory for the driver’s seat, and keyless start. Mid-level Prestige models come standard with heated leather seats and navigation, while top-end R-Sport models add exterior design cues, lane-keeping assist and more.

Factory Options

XF S models come with an upgraded engine, putting out 380 horsepower to the standard model’s 340. Other options include the InControl Touch Pro, which adds a larger touch screen, a navigation system with a solid-state drive, and a host of other features. Also available are front and rear parking sensors, a comfort and convenience package that includes soft-close doors, plus cooled and heated front seats and heated rear seats. A Driver Assistance Pack adds adaptive cruise control, proximity cameras and traffic-sign recognition. There’s also a luxury package that adds a suede headliner, among other interior upgrades.

Engine & Transmission

With the 2017 Jaguar XF, buyers can choose from two versions of a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and one 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbodiesel. The first V6 is a 340-horsepower version, available in Prestige, Premium and R Sport models. Opt for the XF S and you get the 380-horsepower version. Interestingly, torque figures for both engines are identical. The 2.0-liter turbodiesel offers nearly identical torque but with vastly better fuel economy and is available on the all but the S trim. All Jaguar XF models are available in all-wheel drive, and all route their power through an 8-speed automatic transmission that offers shift-for-yourself paddles on the steering wheel. Surprisingly, despite the 40-horsepower advantage the XF S models have, there’s no fuel-economy penalty, although both engines do require premium fuel.
