Positive Review

"Best mercedes ever built."

Hard to believe this car is 21 years old and drives better then a new cars. Quality you cannot compare to other cars. The engine is very responsive and suspension handles well. Could keep this car for the rest of you life if you live in warm climate and maintain properly. Excellent gas milage for a v8.20 TO 25 MPG

Critical Review

"Beautiful on the outside...."

People have told me in the same breath that these E320s are well-made, and that the wiring harness, head gasket, transmission, and air conditioning are very common problems with them, problems which each cost at least 2500$ to fix. If you read the reviews on this site carefully, you will notice that even people who give the car high ratings have often encountered at least one or two of these problems. I have owned this car for 2.5 years, during which time I have spent over 7000$ on it (a figure which does not include routine maintenance). I have treated it well, as its previous owner did: it has been garaged its entire life and has been worked on only by Mercedes-certified mechanics. Basically, this car is truly beautiful to look at and (when it's working) fun to drive, but be prepared to spend more on non-routine repairs than you paid for the car.

Best car I've ever owned!

I bought the car (a E 300 Diesel) used with 142,000 miles on the clock and made it my daily driver for 17 years. The only major expense I experienced was the replacement of the catalytic converter...a rare thing to have to replace on a diesel. Other than that normal maintenance was all that was required. I loved this car as it was the most comfortable car I've ever had... It was the perfect fit for my needs. I finally replaced it with an 2015 E250 (diesel) and so far haven't been as impressed. Wish I had my old E300 back!

Silk and Fire, they said
Pros

Real old-world Mercedes, with hooligan muscle.

Cons

A four-door with a fixed top - no iconic classic.

A proper engine and chassis, four doors and four seats, all with real German quality. I always thought that was the recipe for a GT car, and found it here. It is a E500 of the 1995 model year, a W124.036 in factory speak. It looks like a taxi (except for the fender bulges) and goes 160 mph and does the quarter in 14.5 secs. Those were Ferrari / Porsche figures back then. I found it in Munich in 2002. The seller was a film producer who wanted a 911. The hard charging boys do not like the anti-slip which does not switch off but this is not a BMW M3. It is a balanced fast tourer, at its best on a free Autobahn or a hilly country road where you enjoy its accurate handling. The quality is real old Mercedes. What should I add? I say these are the best deal you can get. Go find one.

A timeless classic
Pros

Reliable, simple to work on, beautiful and comfort

Cons

Expensive parts

I bought my 1995 E320 as my first car and I still enjoy it tremendously after 5 years. The design is something timeless and still looks modern and not dated. The interior has ergonomic and visibility that puts new cars to shame. The quality of parts and workmanship is very high They can be expensive to maintain depending on how far you want to restore them and if you are diy person and do some of the work yourself. The expensive items are wiring harness, head gasket, transmission reverse issue, and ac evaporator if u need AC working.

What more can a saloon driver want?
Pros

Power, quality, keen sense of living well.

Cons

Some spare parts already hard to get.

My E500 of the 1995 model year had run seven years and 72000 kms (45000 miles) when I bought it for 20000 euros in Munich in January 2002. Now it has done 210000 kms (131000 miles). All this time it has been my only car. I enjoy the easy power (320 hp DIN) and balanced handling, though strict legal limits and ambitious police here in Finland keep speeds down. The old school Benz quality is superb and styling by Bruno Sacco a classic. It is good never to meet another driver you envy. Porsche 964 was W124.036’s only competitor when I chose a car in Germany. The Mercedes’ rear seat were useful and I did not feel of the Porsche type. Second hand, the E500 was right. This continues to be my dream car. There have been no major repairs.

They dont make them like this anymore
Pros

Built like a tank, amazing ride, visability

Cons

Expensive to maintain if on budget

I have owned my E320 Wagon for 13 years after purchasing from the orginal owner. We have loved this car from day one, and the ride and craftsmanship is excellent. After 200k miles the car has no rattle and the rise is still sleeky smooth. Its not the fastest car off of the line, but once moving its no snail. The cost of ownership can be expensive, but once you replaced the electric harness, rear suspension air bags replaced the rest has been normal wear and tear. If your looking for an old school tank this is a must have.
