Lincoln has had to issue recalls to some of its vehicles over the past few years dealing with faulty airbags as well as possible transmission and powertrain problems. Vehicles included in the recalls are Lincoln’s more popular sedans Continental and MKZ, and SUVs including the MKX and Navigator.
For 2017 Lincoln MKZ vehicles with 2.0L engines and 6-speed automatic transmissions, a recall was issued to deal with faulty welds on torque converter studs. If the studs fail, the torque converter loses its connection to the engine and the vehicle won’t move. NHTSA reports 68.2 percent of just over 6,000 vehicles have been fixed.
Another recall in 2017 was for 2016-2017 Lincoln MKT vehicles with 3.5L GTDI engines. An oil leak from the turbocharger could pose a fire risk. Dealers are expected to inspect for improperly brazed oil supply lines in the turbocharger and replace them as necessary. This recall campaign registered an 86.4 percent completion rate in April 2018.
A total of 27,351 2016-2017 Lincoln Continental and MKX vehicles were recalled for airbags on the driver side that would not fully inflate. In some instances, the cushion would detach from the air bag module altogether. The completion rate for the airbags was at 81.4 percent as of April 2018.
In 2016, Lincoln began recalling 2011-2012 Lincoln Navigator vehicles. More than 150,000 vehicles were included for automatic transmissions that would downshift to first gear, regardless of speed. Updated software is needed to fix the issue. Based on a January 2018 report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 68.9 percent of recalls had been completed fixes.
