As the brand’s flagship, the 2022 BMW 8 Series has big shoes to fill. We’re happy to report that it meets this high bar if you’re willing to pay for it. The BMW 8 Series is available in three distinct body styles: 2-door coupe, convertible, or a 4-door “Gran Coupe.” All three serve up the best of what the BMW brand has to offer in terms of performance, style, and luxury.
As a grand touring luxury car, the BMW 8 Series delivers the performance of a sports car with the comfort of a high-end sedan. It becomes even more like a luxury sedan in its 4-door form with the added practicality of roomier back seats.
A range of exciting engines allows you to choose which level of performance best suits your tastes. The high-performance M8 is a truly outstanding machine, but its eye-watering price makes it a questionable value proposition.
The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors, but here's a general idea of what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 BMW 8 Series models when purchasing from a dealership.

For reference, the 2022 BMW 8 Series originally had a starting sticker price of $85,995, with the range-topping 8 Series ALPINA B8 xDrive Gran Coupe Sedan 4D starting at $140,895.
In all of its many forms, the 2022 BMW 8 Series is a rewarding car to drive. The base 840i model is no supercar, but the turbocharged 6-cylinder engine has more than enough guts to deliver some adrenaline to the driver while being a smooth and manageable highway cruiser.
The handling is truly sports-car-like, while the ride quality is smooth and serene. Upgrading to the twin-turbo V8 in the M850i models gives you much more power and torque, and the handling remains firmly planted to the road partially thanks to the well-tuned xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The Drive system is optional on the 840i and standard on the M850i.
The BMW M8 is on the next level. With 600 horsepower (617 in the Competition model), you wouldn’t be out of line to call this a supercar. Like the M850i, the M8 comes standard with xDrive, but it offers a special rear-wheel-drive (RWD) mode that significantly changes how this car drives, giving it a more tail-happy nature. It also comes with a special adaptive suspension system with a few drive modes to choose from, or you can customize it to your liking.
The front seats of the BMW 8 Series cradle the driver and front passenger in comfort with premium materials and a sophisticated design. The back seats are a different story. This is a big coupe, but legroom is still pretty cramped in the back of the 2-door models.
The 4-door Gran Coupe has more generous legroom, but the headroom is still a bit compromised by the sloping roofline. Even in 4-door guise, the 8 Series is not much of a family car. Your passengers would be more comfortable in the back of a 5 Series, which is a more practical and affordable car that’s capable of similar performance.
The 2022 BMW 8 Series has styling that is distinctly BMW in the form of an elegant and sporty grand touring car. The styling isn’t quite as dramatic as some competing luxury sports cars like the Lexus LC, but it’s aesthetically a happy medium between traditional BMW styling and a more modern look.
One of our favorite things about the BMW 8 Series is the wide variety of body styles.
There’s the traditional 2-door coupe harkening back to the “E31” 8 Series of the 1990s, a 2-door convertible, and a 4-door Gran Coupe. All three are stylish cars with their own personalities.
If you’ll almost never use the back seats, then you can get away with one of the 2-door models, but if you’re going to have back-seat passengers with any regularity, then they’ll appreciate the extra space in the Gran Coupe and you’ll still be getting a slick-looking luxury sports car.
4-DOOR GRAN COUPE
The sleek 4-door Gran Coupe model gives the BMW 8 Series sedan-like practicality while retaining the thrilling performance of a luxury sports car. This is a graceful execution of the “4-door coupe” body style.
INCREDIBLE ENGINES
The turbocharged inline-6 and V8 engines available under the hood of the BMW 8 Series are stellar. The 6-cylinder delivers a highly satisfying blend of performance and efficiency, while the V8 gives you more muscle and an intoxicating exhaust note to match.
The 2022 BMW 8 Series comes well-appointed in the base 840i trim across all three body styles. Standard features include the M Sport Package (19-inch wheels, aerodynamic body kit, M steering wheel, M Sport brakes, M Sport differential), Dynamic Damper Control, a power trunk, power front seats, heated front seats, armrests, and steering wheel, Nappa leather upholstery, ambient interior lighting, the Active Guard safety tech suite, adaptive LED Laserlight headlights, Harman Kardon premium audio, wireless device charging, Live Cockpit Pro with navigation, a head-up display, an Anthracite headliner, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Additional standard equipment in the Gran Sport model includes 4-zone automatic climate control, a power rear sunshade, and a panoramic sunroof.
Most drivers will be more than satisfied with the luxurious features of the base 840i, but more mechanical, aesthetic, and technology features can be added to this grand touring car.
The xDrive AWD system is a $2,900 upgrade for the 840i and is standard on the M850i. On top of the engine upgrade and standard xDrive, the M850i adds ventilated front seats, aluminum dark trace interior trim, an increased top speed limiter, and active roll stabilization.
There are also various option packages available across the model range. The Driving Assistance and Driving Assistance Professional packages add more safety tech, the Comfort Seating Package adds front ventilated seats and neck warmers to the 840i convertible, and there’s a Cooling and High Performance Tire package for the M850i coupe and Gran Coupe.
The base engine in the BMW 8 Series is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6. It’s upgradable to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with a few different variations of the same engine available. The base 6-cylinder is an excellent engine with more than enough power to satisfy most drivers while returning respectable fuel economy numbers.
The available V8 is predictably less efficient, but it’s a must for the driver with a big appetite for performance and an equally big budget. The mildest V8-powered 8 Series is the M850i xDrive, but it can be had with a whopping 600 horsepower in the M8 or 617 hp in the M8 Competition.
Rear-wheel drive is standard on the 6-cylinder 840i models and the xDrive AWD system is available. Every 8 Series comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
